Addiction Treatment
Addictions encompass both substance dependency and psychological addictive behaviours. Today’s understanding of addictions and addictive behaviours is in progress as new research uncovers new information to better our understanding.
Addictions based on substance dependency are epidemic in society and have a negative impact on family, work, and other important areas of life. These substance dependencies range in severity, as do their treatments. Substance dependency includes alcohol and drugs, including tobacco.
Psychological addictive behaviours are compulsive behaviours as they exhibit unstoppable compulsions within an individual. Compulsive behaviours include such things as gambling, sex, internet, and shopping.
Treatment varies for both substance dependency and psychological addictions. Both conditions generally can be treated through a variety of medications and therapy. Treatment for individuals with severe cases of addiction are usually administered through a rehabilitation facility where doctors and addictions specialists monitor, medicate and use different forms of talk therapy, as well as group therapy to help patients overcome their addictive behaviour.
Addictions can happen to anyone, in any stage of their life. Addictions do not discriminate between age, gender or race and should always be taken seriously. Addictions are sometimes easier to deal with in their earlier stages and should never be ignored. If you or someone that you know is suffering from an addiction, please help them by leading them to the appropriate source where they will receive the help that they need.
